i've got goldtecs, and they're very nice. i waited ages for mine. phil wood hubs are about only the next best thing, but they're also double the price!
a good book on wheels is the bicycle wheel by jobst brandt. most libraries have access to it either through another library or in storage. it's quite old, but bike wheels haven't really changed that much unless you're going for super modern 12 spoke thingies.
