Probably just didn't push the button.
There was no locknut!
The pedals are Lyotard but the cheap 80s ones without the locknut. I apologise for wasting folks time but at least I've learnt how to do pedals. I'm just glad I didn't buy these ones - they were already on the bike when I got it.
