  • I find some things in London fascinating. I've always wondered why there was a bit of elevated motorway in Ladbroke grove that went nowhere. I Found out today, that in the 1960's, the Greater London Council put forward a series of plans, to build a network of urban elevated motorways (four lanes on each carriageway) which would cross the city. It was nick named the London Box.

The only part that was completed was the Westway, and the east cross route. Apparently there is a motorway ramp near Hackney Wick that goes nowhere? The westway would have been extended out to Primrose Hill. Where it would meet the M1, There would have been elevated interchange at chalk farm rd. It would have crossed at Highbury Corner. The M11 would have come in as far as Islington. And the M23 would have come into Brixton, this is why the M23 starts at Junction 6 and not Junction 1 today. They then would have been joined up like the M25 Creating Ringway 1 (The london Box) 1000's of homes parks and businesses would have been demolished, to make way for the future.

Thank god it failed and was never completed. Crazy 1960's planners.
