I not suggesting for a second that a truing stand is an absolute necessity for wheel building but I have a Park Tools TS2 and it just makes the whole process so much simpler. Having it auto-centre the hub in the jig makes dishing or re-dishing a wheel a complete breeze.
Can’t recommend this jig enough, though they’re pricey, I think for the added ease of use they’re worth it and you save a little by not needing to buy a dishing tool. Though I realise that if your using a frame/old set of forks with zip ties, you wouldn’t need/bother with a dishing tool either.
