Hold down Shift when you click a link.
Or use Firefox and redefine middle-click in your about:config to do just that.
I won't change the default navigation. It should be up to you and your browser what happens. So leaving it as is and letting you decide whether to hold down shift or configure your browser differently is the best thing.
