Thing is with bike thieves, most of them will either be doing it to order or choosing an item to steal which they can get the most money for. Sounds like you have desirable wheels. They probably didn't know what hub it was but was attracted to the deep V's. If there's a load of nice bikes together chances are the owners will be very close by and you'd have thought they wouldn't even bother. If they were desperate they would've gone for the nearest wheels I guess. It could've been sabotage!!! Someone wanting you to have an accident rather than stealing your wheels!...
Either way, Bricklane is the most dodgy fucking area going. People don't give a shit. I doubt another cyclist would attempt to nick your wheels. Theives go out looking for items to complete the bike they're building up to sell. A nice wheel might get them an extra few quid. They'll have the tools needed and might plan to take the bike to a different town. I bought a bike from eBay about 3 years ago and when it arrived all the parts were completely different and it had been treated very badly for a decent bike. I reported it and got them banned. Couldn't get money back. Had it for 2 weeks and then it got nicked!
