Yeah I agree that wedge-style is not great for rougher riding. An internal binder on the other hand has worked great for me but then again I don't mtb. Ofcourse a single internal binder won't resist torque as well as two rearward facing binders, just as a single binder securing the handlebar clamp is inferior to two or four binders.
This is my favourite style of stem. I've made a few myself but quite the faff compared to rearward facing binders.
