  • I've tested a few wedge clamp stem and they've been universally poor. I just don't think an external wedge on the steerer is a good geometry for the forces that a stem sees. ISO standard is 50Nm resistance to torque and most wedge stems are right on or below that limit depending on steerer material. Two bolt stems are generally 150-200Nm.

  • Yeah I agree that wedge-style is not great for rougher riding. An internal binder on the other hand has worked great for me but then again I don't mtb. Ofcourse a single internal binder won't resist torque as well as two rearward facing binders, just as a single binder securing the handlebar clamp is inferior to two or four binders.

    This is my favourite style of stem. I've made a few myself but quite the faff compared to rearward facing binders.
