To be devil's advocate, why was this not discussed at the trial?
Because the prosecution had all the evidence, unrestricted access in a way the defence did not, and much more resources than the defence. This imbalance is always there in criminal trials unless the defendant is very rich. One of the original motivations for the creation of the Crown Prosecution Service was to mitigate this (if the police investigating a crime aren't also responsible for the prosecution, they might have less incentive to hide conflicting evidence) but it didn't; people whose sole job is prosecution have even more of an incentive to stack the odds.
