It depends on the timescale. Typically people say less than 5 years equities are risky. But even that's an average, invest right before a big crash and it will be longer.
Sure, it could also go up more than you ever thought but to get that scenario you have to be comfortable with the other one, and it sounds like you're not, @BondMax?

The last sentence and the timeline you’ve proposed make me think you’re best staying parked up with that money in the cash ISA. Just my opinion though.
