If you use standard house bricks they'll get frost damage if they're laid flat. If you don't want to use pavoirs, I think you'd need to use engineering bricks. The top of the wall in my back garden was topped with standard house bricks, and they've largely crumbled away due to frost damage when the water sits on them, soaks the bricks and then freezes.

I want a stone circular path to surround a tree I'm putting in the front garden. So a metre or so diameter hole in the middle, maybe a tad less, and an outside diameter of two metres or so. I'm thinking old bricks laid on sand. Any tips on where to go hunting?
