Always go full guard, even on a 91km gravel ride, it work pretty well (disclaimer, did not go through stupid mud).

What guards are they? Look decently wide for 'proper' tires

PDW, the stiffness is why I run it, plus it’s very slim giving enough clearance with the 47mm tyres.
