I think he was appealing for offside. He was facing the other way when the ball was headed forward and couldn't see the three players playing Ivanovic onside, but when he turned round Ivanovic was the furthest player forward.

Oh he was definitely appealing for offside! I just found it funny because - as you say - there were three players between Ivanovic and the goal-line. :D
