  • Is there a current consensus about the best bang for your back on a light that can deal with illuminating pitch black roads or bikepacking at night?

I need something that goes slightly beyond just being seen, but nothing quite as mega as the top end of the Exposure range, as I would just double up with a headtorch if this was going to be the case.

  • Mid range Exposure? Toro or Race models?

  • I got a Lumintop B01 of Aliexpress and has been perfect for overnight audax and nighttime offroad riding. Very long battery life and replaceable batteries too.
Has a cutoff beam so it doesn't startle drivers... for whatever that is worth

  • maybe a bit controversial but I've been using a Halfords own brand 'advanced' front light for years.
I use it regularly during winter commutes on unlit lanes.
it has a really good range of modes, great battery life with a really useful indicator on the top, can be used as a power bank if required, and even has an optional remote switch so can be mounted on forks or on a rack but still switched between modes.

I think mine is the old 1000 lumen version.
looks like they've just refreshed the entire range.

  • I can second a Moon (Meteor Vortex I think) as a very decent front battery light to see by. And I think mine was c.£40/£50. Got a Moon something rear as well, for when I'm not living the dynamo life

  • I don't like the looks, but I do like the specs & the price

  • Dynamo lights?

Second hand Exposure (we are still using 2 or 3 from ebay) or one of their helmet lights with a handlebar mount (I have a Joystick and Diablo, both bought new for just over £100 each I guess)?

I just checked and the Maxx-D V3 we have, I bought used off ebay in 2014!
Same year for the 2010 V1 version of the Strada we have - but this one is commuting only, it wouldn't last a full night.

  • I used a Knog PWR Trail when commuting through pitch dark lanes in rural Essex and it was great (actually bought two of them, so I had a spare battery if it ever ran out). I'd thoroughly recommend.
