Boy is this some false dichotomy.
I guess it's just the way it goes though. You go to Germany, you discuss trade. You go to Belguim, you discuss EU policy. You go to Italy, you discuss how much you love drowning poor people out at sea. Those are your only options.

All at a time where we're trying to rebuild relationships with Europe. Post Brexit we are in such an unbelievably weak position. It's a testiment to how ingrained British exceptionalism is, that even now you have voices on the left who take it as a given.
IMHO if Britain, France and Germany had been thoughtful and taken Italy's concerns seriously 15yrs ago Meloni wouldn't be in power today. But we are where we are, so we've got to make lemonade.
