Jill Douglas on the BBC reported that she was stood next to the French TV crew who interviewed him afterwards and he said it was a racing incident, nothing more. Apparently he said the same in a press conference the medallists had after the ceremony, but I've not seen any links to that.

Thats cool, glad to hear. I wondered if there'd be outrage and calls for marked overtaking lanes or something.
