• Ohh, good luck with the build and heal up!

The other dilemma I'm having is having an aero-tubed gravel bike with box/low-depth rims? Maybe I should just go mid-depth, at which point you're basically talking carbon or even more expensive alu sets.

  • Is that an aesthetic question? In which case I'm basically out, because most of my bikes are fugly and functional. I'm still a big "aero wheels only if you're racing" proponent. The extra faff of finding long valves and/or long valve tubes and the sketchiness in the wind is enough reason most people SHOULD be riding shallow wheels. "They look sexy" is the reason most people ARE riding deep wheels.

(I'm definitely buying 50mm rims and running stupid MTB tyres)

  • I'm totally in the aero is king camp as according to "science" bigger, bluffer folks actually benefit more from aero profiles than a seasoned, lean rider does, and because it trumps weight... That side, there's a limit, and if it weren't for the bike in question (especially as it's gravel) I probably wouldn't care and settle on shallow rims.
