I’d send it back. The worst they can do is offer a new one at trade price, or refuse to repair yours for free.

Reading between the lines, it sounds like maybe the worst for inchpincher would be a straight replacement for another refurb without the sentimental attachment.

Dare I go as far as to say some buyer validation for a new purchase 😉
