  • Over 2mm each side? No need as far as I can see. I’d back a well tightened QR lever to pull the dropouts fairly parallel.

    It's a bit yuck, and quite likely to make the axle flex slightly to put the locknuts hard against the dropouts... Probably making for a tad extra friction, and uneven cone wear if not a cartridge hub.

    I wouldn't sweat an OLD increase of 2mm or less without dropout alignment, but IMO 4mm should be tweaked.

  • Slimming down the end caps on the axle with a bench grinder seems to be another option. I think 1mm either side would make enough difference.

  • Yeah, there's plenty of spare space to work with; I have a wheel on which I swapped the 8/9/10s cassette body for a 7s one, and then jammed a slightly machined 10s billet cassette back on.
