If you shine a UV light at a ripe banana, it'll show up the browness in a violet colour. If you shine it at a bruised banana, it won't look any different. The reason for this is that there are some animals that have UV on their visible spectrum, and this allows them to identify which bananas are ripe to eat.

Kräutler suggests two different explanations: “In contrast to humans, many of the animals that eat bananas can see light in the UV range. The blue luminescence of the banana fruit could give them a distinct signal that the fruit is ripe.”

I think by now I have learned more in this thread than in school.

So do I get this right - dogs are able to see / detect the degradation of chlorophyll with their UV vision capabilities because they're too dumb to see proper yellow to know the banana is ripe?
