When performative piety becomes a substitute for truly virtuous living, a necessary part of the performance is to denigrate anybody who points out the gulf between the performer's words and his actions.

And if activist types start throwing it around then you should probably take a look at your actions and see if they match up with what you say and also examine your motivations for saying them.
