  • Going by the uneven colouration on the crack surface the crack might have started a while ago.

    I have no idea how quickly the aluminium dulls like that but it doesn't really matter, they shouldn't be cracking.

  • That looks like anodising rather than dulling, which, if that was the case, would mean the crack was there when those cranks were manufactured…

  • The uneven colouration is the result of foot rubbing.
    Unless there is an impact these cranks should last a long time.
    A stress fracture may not be readily apparent after an impact.
    If components aren't kept clean:

    1. there is less of an imperative to look after it
    2. difficult to do visual and safety inspections.
