Built some quite tall cabinets (1m) some time ago, and the speakers designer ( I was following plans) said acoustically definitely NOT solid wood cabinetry at that size. He recommended MDF panels, with birch ply bracing inside, so that's what I did.
I then decided to rosewood veneer the whole thing - now that stretched my woodworking skills. Advice veneer a small box first!
I looked into building my own speaker cabinets recently and also assumed that solid hardwood was the way to go, turns out it’s not.
MDF and ply have better stability, less shrinkage and more predictable sonic characteristics, so veneer is the place to be.
