  • Stunning. How are you managing safety and security?

  • So far we’ve had no problems, safety is always on our mind but is fairly low on the list of daily concerns.

In 11 months we’ve taken 1 bus to avoid an area experiencing a cartel turf war, have been delayed by a day once when some other cartels had arranged a fight and closed the road and once got a police escort (in the most casual of senses) on a stretch of road known for robberies.

A handful of friends on the road have been held up (non violently) and robbed for smallish amounts of cash and valuables but I view that as just being unlucky. I’m aware it might happen to us somewhere on the way and although I hope it doesn’t I view it as a hazard of the job that might or might not happen.

In general we ask local people about the road ahead and take extra care in urban areas as well as when we are travelling near borders.

We wild camped pretty much care free for most of Mexico, Guatemala and Costa Rica but in El Salvador and Honduras we always pitched the tent at restaurants or fire stations in places we’d been told we’re safe.

Dogs chasing us is the scariest thing we deal with most days.
