If anyone comes looking for the same information, SRAM replied and recommended crankbrothers shoe shields.
They're about a tenner plus delivery, but they're just thin metallic shims with holes for the screws. I reckon there are a couple of Guinness cans in the recycling that could be cut with scissors, folded over to the right thickness and drilled for the same effect.
