Yes, you sometimes see people with them wrapped round their neck. Also the insert will be covered in sealant so I guess for a long ride it’s worth having a spare voile strap or something ready to stash it.
Never worried about it for xc as I’d probably just ride the rest of the lap on the insert then stop

If you're running inserts and kill a tyre such that you need to put a tube in, presumably you have to remove the insert (and valve and sealant) and then carry it home with you?
