  • I wasn't unaware that not all footballers make the big time. My youngest daughter is training to be a musician, an industry that has a similar dynamic.

What did surprise me was that the PFA needs to sell off a unique piece of art to fund its' charitable work. The £8 million they hope it will sell for (which will no doubt be significantly less than that when fee's and commissions have been deducted), is relatively small change at the top end of the business.

It seems to me that the offices of the PFA is a perfectly good place for the Lowry to reside - it would be a shame if it ends up living in a shipping container owned by an oligarch in some freeport.

  • A lot of people have said what I was going to say, but I'd add that I think people also underestimate the financial costs of being a professional footballer - from food, to support staff, etc.

If you earn the big bucks then it makes little difference. But in the lower leagues it can bite even when you've made it.

Also vs musicans - while there is undoubtedly a huge time cost for young musicians, but a lot of their activities are still in a quasi educational format or surrounding. If they're good they aren't constantly removed from education to perform in the same way potential football stars are.

    It's fucking brutal.
