Try this:

Open Google app
Tap profile top right
Settings
General
Turn discover off

I also turned off swipe to access Google app by long pressing on the home screen and selecting home settings.

I had no idea I had either of these things enabled, clearly I'd never swiped left on this phone.

I had a look at my suggested interests which it could notify me about, included such riveting stuff as "light switch", "bag" and "cast iron"

Haha, as soon as I saw one of my interests was washing machines, that shit had to go.
