If the freewheel is dead, the pedals will spin without any of pawls engaging. No sounds or creaks.
Simple enough to replace it if you can locate the part.
Surprised they wouldn't diagnose & fix it.
That was my thinking also. But it doesn’t matter now. I spent the afternoon driving to Yorkshire for a wedding and in the meantime the bike was sold 🙃
