Did you actually watch the film? You seem to be making the same mistake as the original protesters (who didn't watch it either). Jesus is portrayed entirely reverently, the only new testament characters to take any ribbing at all are the 3 wise men, who briefly go to the wrong stable. Showing people in the audience for the sermon on the mount not understanding it is hardly blasphemy.
New Testament events happen in the background and aren't attacked. In the foreground, a whole lot of things are satirised and only some of them are about religion - there's as much time spent on factional politics and colonial power. There's definitely a satire on organised religion in general going on, but it isn't targetting Christ or (specifically) Christianity.
Of course they knew it would wind Mary Whitehouse up, but that also isn't blasphemy.

I get the argument that it's not out of bounds from a comedy or satire perspective. But it's ripping the piss out of the origin story of the Christian Church. It's only "gentle" because so many people dgaf.
