  • What would you all recommended for something that isn't going to cost the earth?

The only P&S film camera I've kept are Olympus Mju2 and Nikon L35AF. But these are quite overpriced now.

I don't own one currently but the Vivitar UltraWideSlim is really fun. Dirt cheap new, Instand shooting, Lomo vibes, tiny, 22mm lens, happy-accident camera. The complete opposite of the Leica.

Throw some random, cheep iso400 film through it and if you get a good shot with it you can guarantee it wont be like any other photo taken at the wedding.

  • very inconsistent!

True. There is always a more guesswork involved than with most cameras. You get better at it.

Ricoh R1, or Nikon AF600 are good wideangles. Very pocketable. The same snapshot vibe as the Vivitar but auto exposure and good lenses. Fuji Zoomdate 2.8 Silvi is another pocket, wide compact with 24-50mm (I think) zoom. It’s relatively modern, though I didn’t love the daytime results from that so much, with the flash it’s alright.

The flashs for the XA series are too slow, quite big, not light and ugly 😂 . I didn’t get good results with an XA2, particularly indoors when the shutter speed dips and your left guessing shutter speed (with no control) and scale focus. It’s fine for street photography with no flash … but you can’t set iso above 800. It is fast very fast to use. I’d love to try the (28mm lens) XA4 but they’re rare. All the XAs break quite a lot - something to do with the shutter release design.

The L35af or Mju2 do similar (to an XA2) but better. Both have less sought after variations: the Mju1 and L35AF2. These are still considered ok I think, though I can’t vouch for them … (I do own a L35AF2, but have not used it much, and I have zero experience of shooting the Mju1).
