The ride east to the Cherbourg Peninsular along the D-Day beaches to Le Havre for the evening ferry back to Portsmouth

Is this an easy route to follow with no technology on you? I've been meaning to do this for a while (albeit probably the other direction).

Pretty straightforward. It’s not too windy or too many junctions but you’ll want to stay on the country roads rather than the RN’s.
