So many ‘Sketches’, so few finished songs.
Anyone else suffering with this?
Anyone got any advice or tips to get things finished?Feels like producers that don't relate to this are the exception.
For me, breaking up writing, recording, and mixing into separate sessions is important for me as without it I'll spend the first hour eqing a Kick and loose all my momentum.
Lately I've also been putting time limits on how long I have to write each part and that's also helped me a lot.
I've also very recently tried @Regal and @EB 's suggestions with success. It took me far too long to get over myself and try mimicking another track, but I learned a ton when I finally did and it even sparked some new ideas.

I'm in agreement with this. I'll have sessions where I focus on making new patches, ones where I'll make sketches using pre-made patches, ones where I'll focus on arranging pre-made sketches and I haven't really got to the final point of mastering pre-made arrangements as I only really do this for fun at the moment and that seems to have the lowest fun:time ratio of any of the above steps.

Think this is great advice, I do (well, it's been about a year since I last did...) game dev as a hobby, and it's a similar thing. It's a struggle to balance the job of creating something original with actually finishing it. Re-creating existing games (even stripped down versions or super basic retro games) is a great way to practice actually finishing something.
