Got a birthday coming up and I was going to ask mrsSacred for some binoculars for some basic stargazing (maybe a bit of bird spotting too)
Any recommendations for a solid Tiagra/105 level pair?

A monopod can help a lot with astro binoculars

This also sounds like a good idea, I generally took to sitting down with my back against a wall/tree, with elbows on knees for support.
