  • Does anyone have advice on a budget router which will be an improvement on the stock Virgin one?

I'm starting a new role in a week and a bit and I'm short of cash until I receive the first pay cheque. We've rejigged our flat and the office is now on the opposite side of the flat from the router - speeds are 100mb in the living room and barely 10mb in the office, which isn't going to work for video calls etc

It sounds like a more powerful router is the best first step, and it'd be useful to get some first hand advice on what might be best - cheers!

  • I'd have a think about the best way to fix it (also, bear in mind that 10mbps should be plenty fast enough for video calls, there are shitloads of people out there who have internet slower than that).

Rather than replace the virgin router I'd probably just look at fixing the wi-fi part. If your office computer has ethernet then a powerline adpater may be a cheap fix. Can you move the router, putting it in a better location is generally the best fix. If not can you run a cable more centrally and add a wifi access point (the unifi ones are popular on here).

Buying a budget router and putting it in the same place as the stock virgin one is unlikely to get much better results. If you can't move the router location you probably want to look at a mesh system. The Deco ones seem well reviewed.
