• I rode my jump bike to the BMX track in Brockwell park today and it made me consider the brakes thing from a slightly different angle.

The jump bike (SRAM Level on the back) brake works fine, it's well specified for the bike.

But - braking force comes in as you pull the lever, there's a bite point in there where you feel the brake start to bite (although you hear the pads contacting first) and the more you pull the lever the more braking force you get, until the rear wheel starts to skid.

The Magura's on the other hand (yes, when they're working, but it's only the rear brake on the full suspension that I have issues with remember) are different - you can actually feel the pads hit the rotor through the lever, then with a little more lever pressure you can feel them start to bite. You have such great feel all the way up to the wheel locking, and the power that the brakes are famous for is in some ways only practical because of the feel that the brakes have (when correctly setup).

I think some of this thread should be seen in the light of me not accepting performance from the MT7's that I'd accept from other brakes. Of course, the lever going to the bar is hard to ignore and I'm not defending that - although I'm hopeful that the banjo-tugging might be the explanation for that.
