I'd do the first - they're not fit for purpose or as described an you're protected under cosumer rights act (go to martin lewis site for exact wording). Did you pay on a CC?
I also generally think the level of service is a sliding scale -dropping £100 on something vs a few grand you reasonably have different expectations.

So, we bought some nice Ercol arm chairs, new.
They arrive. They are very 'off'. They look nice though.
In this circumstance, I would have thought the response from the supplier / Ercol would be 'oh, shit, sorry, this must be really disappointing after waiting six months for them, we'll make you some new ones asap'.
But it seems to be 'we 'll get a third party to assess them at your house, and then, something'.
