We had one for our pup, as said, with recall training it lets them get far away without risking them running off.
Aside from puppies, I tend to see them in Huskies, who are notorious for having zero recall, again it lets them have a degree of freedom and distance.
But agreed, they are a massive annoyance and a pain to actually use.
(Didn't experience it being covered in muck, but that may have just been fortune)

Those dog leads which are just c.20m (they are long) of webbing or rope. Surely they're a total ballache to carry around and gather up/unhook from stuff all the time, and they're going to be absolutely filthy, and possibly covered in actual dog shit, the very first time they're used?
