Fair enough, think I’m getting my terminology confused. Was conflating AP’s with the older, dumber types of range extender stuff that you often ended up seeing a couple of different networks with the same name and things flip flopped between.
Sounds like given Ethernet back haul then a decent AP and a decent mesh (also with Ethernet) will be mostly indistinguishable.

They aren't separate networks if you use a layer 2 access point (eg Ubiquiti UniFi) and not a layer 3 router.
