• They aren't separate networks if you use a layer 2 access point (eg Ubiquiti UniFi) and not a layer 3 router.

  • Fair enough, think I’m getting my terminology confused. Was conflating AP’s with the older, dumber types of range extender stuff that you often ended up seeing a couple of different networks with the same name and things flip flopped between.
    Sounds like given Ethernet back haul then a decent AP and a decent mesh (also with Ethernet) will be mostly indistinguishable.

  • Mesh will always have worse performance than APs with cable back haul as you are sharing the limited wireless spectrum for more things. Mesh wins when you can't run cable for some reason.
