Basically, what I've done is remove the swivel bracket (marked with red cross) and I need to cut a bit out of the arm (marked - circular bit behind the bit that connects to the monitor) and replace it with the bit connected to the monitor stand.
I'll let you know how I get on.

When I tried to fit it this morning, it was actually lifting the monitor up a bit at the highest tension so definitely strong enough.
What it can't do is torque the tilt mechanism high enough to be able to keep the monitor facing forward. It just droops down. I'm actually going to remove the tilt part of the monitors stand and jerry rig it to the gas arm with a bit of angle grinding to get it to fit. That should mean I can use the gas arm rather than the massive stand.
