Just overhead of keeping a list so you don't double assign and if you ever need to change for some reason (either subnet or something like DNS server).
As an example I needed to connect over my work VPN to an IP address that is on the same subnet as my home LAN (both private/RFC1918 addresses). Rather than renumber my house I added an extra network for my work machine.

For the majority of my stuff I tend to assign a static IP on my router. Is there any downside to this?
