  • For the majority of my stuff I tend to assign a static IP on my router. Is there any downside to this?

  • Just overhead of keeping a list so you don't double assign and if you ever need to change for some reason (either subnet or something like DNS server).

    As an example I needed to connect over my work VPN to an IP address that is on the same subnet as my home LAN (both private/RFC1918 addresses). Rather than renumber my house I added an extra network for my work machine.

  • Not really.

    But one problem that might arise over time is if you connect them together based on the IP rather than host names. Because then when you replace your router or change something you have to manually good everything
