Funnily enough I had a whole conversation about this last night - an early memory was being very small and walking to nursery holding my dads hand whilst he wore his navy Barbour (I remeber the smell of the wax most clearly) and carried his attaché. It was orignally my grandfathers, the leather handle has snapped, so my dad made a new one from a turned piece of hardwood and 2 brass rods.
He only had a 15 min walk to work so cycling wasnt really worth it, I was saying that it would be nice to have a stroll to work and only need to carry enough to fill a brief/attaché like that...
I have also been watching a lot of fraiser, so i'm probably over romanticing

Bit embarrassed to say I'm shopping for a briefcase... My MW Vandal only lasted a few weeks before I got fed up with not being able to pluck what I needed out of it easily... Been using a Canopy Brewery tote since 2019 but I've outgrown that and it's starting to look a bit threadbare so need something a bit more fit for purpose...
I did see a really nice and not too expensive North Face briefcase/laptop thing a few months back, I thought I'd go back to the store for a look tomorrow but it isn't on their website and I can't find anything that looks remotely like it online anywhere, very puzzling...
What I need... Roomy enough for a 15" laptop, a folio/pad holder thing, my glasses cases, would be great if it'd take my lunch box as well... Not leather or vinyl, nylon or cordura would be good... Any ideas?
I feel so bourgeois... 🤢
Oh, and I don't want it to turn into a fucking backpack... Shoulder strap is fine... I think I'm after a technical briefcase... ðŸ¤
