Yes, obviously the creation of the London Boroughs in 1965 (as part of the creation of the GLC) amalgamated several former London Metropolitan Boroughs into one (e.g., Hackney was put together from Shoreditch, Hackney, and Stoke Newington), and a lot of people still haven't got over that--rightly in the case of place names, because Chiswick really is not Ealing, despite being partly in the borough of that name and partly in Hounslow (but correct me if I've got my boundaries wrong).
I didn't know that was how they were formed, you're exactly right - it's split right between those two. Makes for some (ahem) 'interesting' chat about school catchments at certain times of the year.
