Not proper at all, but last week i decided to treat my 20 year old timberland "gardening boots" to a clean, a condition and some new laces. I bought them in 1999 but they've been used as basically wellies for gardening, DIY and muddy country walks for the last 15 years. Still comfy and still perfectly waterproof. I don't think they'd been cleaned beyond having the mud whacked off them in all that time but they came up quite nice, the conditioner I used darkened them down a lot and dark brown laces made them a bit less 90s hip hop looking. I'd post a pic but i wore them for a long muddy walk yesterday so they're filthy again.
