You asked for recommendations. Beagles and their crosses love the sound of their own voices, which is a shame as they're generally good dogs but like to lead from the front. Dogs with facial creases and squashed noses can have breathing difficulties and get infected, sweaty creases.
We've got a rescue Jack cross and he's the quietest, friendliest dog I've had since a Golden Retriever in my teens. I'd wager a rescue Heinz 57 puppy would be what you need. Battersea at Windsor has always got a glut of Staffies which is what I'd get if I wanted a third dog. -
I spent ages comparing breeds and came down to Border Terrier or Minature Schnauzer .
The Schnauzer has a lower prey drive so we got Otto.
Part of the comparison was how good they were with children and didn’t mind being left alone which might not be relevant to you.
10.4kg will happily walk 10 miles or have 30 mins walk. He can run 5k with me but his pace is really slow. -
I have a Boston. Perfect dogs.
Small enough for living in a flat (we're currently in a 1 bed), but still a proper dog that likes to play and run around. Ours is equally as happy spending all day in bed, or going for a 10km walk in the woods.
Lovely temperament and they don't shed either.

The gf and I are looking at getting a puppy, I'm going to be working from home for the foreseeable future, at least 6 months and even then maybe just 1 day a week in the office after that. She wants something really small like a Chihuahua but I'd rather have something Beagle sized. We currently live in a flat but plan on moving somewhere with a garden asap (maybe in 12 months, who knows, EWS1 innit), there's a big park 15 mins walk away and a smaller one maybe 2 mins walk away. I'm thinking something like a Boston Terrier may be a compromise size-wise, does anyone have a recommendation?
