Don't carbon steerer tubes need a spacer above the stem?

I’m sure someone with more engineering nouse than me will have a good reason why there should be, but I’ve ridden lots of bikes without anything on top and had no issues and seen tons more (including pro bikes) with the same set-up and spoken to pro mechanics who happily do the same, so should be fine (he says with less confidence by the second!!).

Progress! Slow as ever but the CK headset and Sugino bb are in the Pretorius tarck and the steerer cut (anything more scary than cutting the steerer on a fork with custom paint?!). Got some Sugino 75 cranks coming in the post and we’re on the home straight.
