Yes - have bought and sold independently, and no.
You have to do all the negotiating yourself, obv and if you're in a chain you'll have to deal with EAs at the other end. But solicitors do the detail stuff as per usual so it's really just a bit more keeping up with communication once you've agreed prices etc. Having no EA fees gives you an extra bit of virtual cash to share to sweeten the deal.
