I actually know this person and was riding with them before. I know how secure it was , it was locked.

Soz. Assumed it was unlocked. I accept ‘more money than sense’ is unfair, however pissed I was last night.
Roofracks certainly do advertise a bike. And we all know the thieves love a flashy mountainbike.
Was it stolen with threats or unattended? What kind of lock was compromised?
Maybe as it’s such an unusual frame perhaps your friend’s pride and joy can be located. If it’s local scrotes it’ll probably get rattlecanned today.

Pride and joy you say, we all have one or more than one and we do not leave it on a car rack... Without knowing the specifics I'll make a wild guess that it wasn't secured with a lock?
