Deep scrub with neat dish soap and something abrasive - scour pad or similar - followed by a powerwash. You need the soap to breakdown the fat and the scour to remove the baked on fat. I use these soft brass scouring pads that work great for this.
More toxic is something like Jeyes BBQ cleaner but it is nasty stuff. Effective though.

how do people DEEP clean their kettle grills? i dont know what happened this winter but mine is DISGUSTING.
Its kept outside under a cover all winter last year it was fine, this year its an abomination, id guess i forgot to clean it at all after its last use.. but doesnt seem like me im normallyvon top of it
